Tree Pruning

Pruning is probably my favourite type of tree work because I can aid the trees growth and prevent future problems. No two pruning job quotes are alike. "Pruning" to one guy may mean hacking limbs off the tree resulting in serious issues in the future, or even "topping" the tree (generally a terrible practice) . Professional tree pruning is an art and a science. We make precise cuts to minimize the work the tree needs to do to seal off the wound. I am a certified pruner for the city of Moose Jaw and have taken professional training to learn the right techniques. We use the right tool for each task.

So when should you prune your tree? Pruning is best done in the dormant seasons of early spring and fall. We also cannot prune elm trees from April 1st to September 1st due to the Elm pruning ban. This is to help prevent the spread of Dutch Elm Disease.

Trees should be cut back to 6' or more from your roof or other building areas. It is not good for both the structure or the trees health for the branches to be rubbing on the building. We also prune out deadwood which is a breeding ground for disease and pests. I also assess the tree for structural issues and remove any splits or damages sections which would be likely sources of failure later on in a wind or snow storm. We also remove branches over power lines if they threaten the power lines. I also prune out any excessive second growth shoots and inner branches which are too thick. Proper pruning helps boost tree growth.

I can also do directional pruning for fruit bearing trees so that they are producing fruit closer to the ground. If you neglect pruning you'll likely have bigger issues to deal with in the future.

Tree Removal

A tree removal is the choice of last resort, but it is often necessary. The tree may need to be removed due to rot or disease, or damages from a storm. Tree roots can cause serious issues to foundations or underground sewers and water pipes. Sometimes trees have grown into problems for the property, or the tree may be in decline due to old age. Every tree will come down one day. Either by nature, or by mans intervention.

Tree removals can be fairly straightforward, or incredibly complex and dangerous, only to be handled by a qualified crew of trained professionals. It usually depends on the size of the tree, and how many obstacles there are to avoid. I rarely seem to get hired for the easy trees that can be felled in the front yard. These jobs seem to go to the uninsured guys. I'm hired almost every time to do the job where there is limited access, and the tree is very challenging. Most other tree guys have power lines taken down. I work around them. I'm used to being very careful and precise. I like challenging jobs that make me think, and require expertise that only comes with experience.

Land Clearance / Tree Felling

When a new building or roadway is required, tree removal is often required. We have worked for many large Commercial jobs such as the Ministry of Highways, 15 Wing Moose Jaw, and the recent Water Treatment expansion. Many trees need to be felled in safe directions and pieced up to be hauled away.

We carry up to date WCB coverage, appropriate Liability insurance, a wide variety of certifications and training. References available upon request.

Stump Grinding

The best way to eliminate a stump is to have it ground out.

Firewood Sales

We sell quality split and dried firewood. It is cut to an average length of 16 to 18 inches long. The wood is a mixture of Maple, Ash, Spruce and Poplar and Pine. In that mix you've got some hardwoods which are better for long lasting burn time, and some soft woods like spruce and pine which catches and lights faster. Poplar wood is really nice for sitting around an open fire pit because it doesn't throw sparks like spruce will. Every wood has its best use cases. There is no other heat quite like firewood heat. My favourite part of winter is roasting by the fireplace and watching the flames as all stress melts away.
